Ford Fathom EV Pickup Starts at $28,350, Preorders Open in 2027
Ford has named its affordable midsize electric pickup Fathom and confirmed a US$28,350 starting price, five-seat cabin, bidirectional power and early-2027 preorders.
Ford’s affordable electric pickup finally has a name and a much more specific price.
The Ford Fathom will start at US$28,350 before a US$1,595 destination charge, putting the standard-range truck at US$29,945 delivered before taxes and options. Ford also says preorders will open in early 2027, with customer deliveries planned for fall 2027.
That is a sharper promise than the roughly US$30,000 target Ford had been using for the first vehicle on its Universal Electric Vehicle Platform. It also lands within a few hundred dollars of the US-market Maverick hybrid, which is exactly where an affordable electric truck needs to be if Ford wants buyers to compare it with ordinary pickups instead of premium EVs.
The new details were reported by Axios and Tom’s Guide after briefings with Ford. The production design, driving range, battery capacity, charge rate, payload and towing ratings remain under wraps.
What Ford Has Confirmed
The Fathom will be a five-seat midsize pickup rather than a bare-bones two-seat work truck. Ford says it will have more passenger volume than a Toyota RAV4, plus both a front trunk and a conventional cargo bed.
The standard-equipment list is surprisingly ambitious for the announced price:
- A large, high-resolution centre touchscreen
- Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
- Digital-key support
- Bidirectional power capability
- Hardware for Ford’s BlueCruise hands-free highway-driving system
- Apple Maps embedded in the vehicle
“BlueCruise-capable” does not necessarily mean every owner will receive every feature indefinitely without a subscription, and Ford has not released the Fathom’s final package details. Still, including the required hardware on every truck is a notable choice at this price point.
Bidirectional power could matter even more. Ford has not detailed output or supported use cases, but the basic idea is that the truck can send energy back out of its battery instead of only taking power in. Depending on the final hardware and accessories, that could support tools, campsite equipment or backup power.

The Price Is Real, but the Base Truck Is Still an Unknown
The US$28,350 figure applies to a standard-range battery. Ford has not said what “standard range” means, how much an extended-range version will cost or whether the lowest-priced configuration will be widely stocked.
That distinction is important. A compelling electric pickup needs more than a headline price. Buyers still need to know its real-world highway range, cold-weather performance, DC fast-charging curve, payload, towing limits, bed dimensions and insurance costs. Those numbers will determine whether the Fathom works as a useful small truck or mainly as an affordable commuter with a bed.
Ford also has not announced Canadian pricing, preorder timing or availability. A straight currency conversion would be misleading because Canadian MSRPs reflect product planning, equipment, freight and market positioning—not just the exchange rate. Canadian shoppers should treat the US price as evidence of Ford’s target, not as a local quote.
Why Ford Can Aim Below $30,000
Fathom is not a cheaper version of the discontinued F-150 Lightning. It is the first product built around Ford’s Universal Electric Vehicle Platform, a ground-up architecture developed by a smaller team in Long Beach, California.
Ford says the platform is designed to use 20 percent fewer parts and 25 percent fewer fasteners than a typical vehicle. Its new assembly process is intended to cut factory workstations by 40 percent and reduce assembly time by 15 percent. Major sections of the truck are built in parallel and joined later, rather than sending one nearly empty body through a conventional line while workers progressively add everything to it.
The electrical system follows the same logic. Tom’s Guide reports that a 48-volt zonal architecture eliminates roughly 4,000 feet of wiring. Less copper, fewer connectors and shorter installation time all help Ford attack cost without deleting features customers notice.
Production is planned for Louisville Assembly Plant in Kentucky. Ford previously said the truck would use a structural lithium iron phosphate battery floor. LFP chemistry is generally less energy-dense than nickel-rich alternatives, but it can be cheaper, durable and well suited to an EV where price matters more than setting a range record.
Fathom Versus Slate Is Now a Real Fight
The Fathom’s most obvious rival is the US$24,950 Slate Truck, but the two companies are taking opposite routes to affordability.
Slate strips the vehicle back to its essentials, including manual windows and a bring-your-own-device approach to infotainment. Ford is promising a conventional five-seat cabin, built-in screen, smartphone integration, driver-assistance hardware and bidirectional power for roughly US$3,400 more before destination charges.
That makes Ford’s offer look unusually strong on paper. It also raises the execution bar. Ford has to deliver the base model in meaningful volume, keep options from pushing normal trucks far above the headline price and prove its new factory process can hit quality targets. Slate has startup risk; Ford has the challenge of turning a radical internal project into a reliable mass-market product.
What Buyers Should Watch Next
Ford says preorders begin in early 2027, so the next major reveal should fill in the numbers that matter most:
- EPA range for standard- and extended-range batteries
- Battery capacity and DC fast-charging time
- Payload, towing and bed dimensions
- BlueCruise subscription terms
- Final design and trim structure
- Canadian price, timing and charging-port specification
The charging-port question should be straightforward by 2027, but Ford still needs to confirm the Fathom’s production hardware. Native access to the Tesla Supercharger network would be especially valuable for a small truck likely to attract first-time EV buyers.
For now, the price is the headline. Ford has moved from talking about a roughly US$30,000 EV pickup to naming a US$28,350 truck with five seats and a useful standard-equipment list. That does not prove the Fathom will succeed, but it makes the project much harder to dismiss as an abstract platform exercise.
If Ford can hold the price, hit the fall 2027 delivery window and provide credible range, the Fathom could be the first electric pickup that competes directly with mainstream gas and hybrid vehicles on cost. That would be a far more important achievement than building another quick, luxurious truck with a six-figure window sticker.
