2027 Kia Niro Goes Hybrid-Only as EV and PHEV Exit the U.S. Lineup
Kia has priced the refreshed 2027 Niro from $29,890 in the U.S., but the bigger news is that the compact crossover is now hybrid-only.
Kia has put a price on the refreshed 2027 Niro in the United States, but the number is not the most interesting part of the announcement. The compact crossover is now hybrid-only, ending the unusual three-powertrain strategy that previously offered conventional hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and fully electric versions under one name.
The 2027 Niro starts at $29,890 USD before a $1,495 destination charge. Kia America lists five front-wheel-drive trims, topping out at $38,990 for the SX Touring.
For comparison, the outgoing 2026 Niro Hybrid LX started at $27,390 before destination. That makes the new entry price $2,500 higher, although the refreshed lineup also adds a new S trim and more available driver-assistance technology.
The bigger change is what Kia no longer lists. There is no 2027 Niro EV and no 2027 Niro PHEV in the U.S. announcement. Kia explicitly describes the vehicle as offered exclusively as a hybrid, leaving the 139-horsepower gasoline-electric model to carry the badge by itself.
This does not mean Kia is walking away from EVs. It does mean the Niro is no longer being asked to cover every step of the electrification ladder as newer purpose-built models move into the lineup.

The 2027 Niro receives redesigned front and rear fascias while retaining its compact crossover proportions.
What Changed for 2027
The exterior update gives the Niro a new front bumper, revised grille treatment, and vertically stacked lighting elements built around Kia’s Star Map design language. The rear fascia has also been reshaped, and new exterior colours join the range.
Inside, Kia says the available Connected Car Navigation Cockpit brings over-the-air update capability. Available driver-assistance upgrades include Highway Driving Assist 2, a surround-view monitor, and a blind-spot view monitor.
The powertrain is familiar. A 1.6-litre four-cylinder engine works with an electric motor and a six-speed dual-clutch transmission for 139 hp and 195 lb-ft of torque. Kia also says it revised the suspension tuning and worked on ride comfort and cabin quietness.
The U.S. trim ladder now looks like this:
- Niro LX FWD: $29,890
- Niro S FWD: $30,590
- Niro EX FWD: $31,390
- Niro SX FWD: $35,440
- Niro SX Touring FWD: $38,990
All prices exclude the $1,495 destination charge. Kia has not included all-wheel drive in the announced lineup, so the Niro remains a front-drive alternative to larger hybrid crossovers.
The Niro EV Leaves a 253-Mile Legacy
The outgoing Niro EV was not technologically cutting-edge by 2026, but it was a useful, right-sized electric crossover. Kia’s official 2026 specifications list a 64.8-kWh battery, a 150-kW motor, and 253 miles of EPA range.
Its weakness was charging. Kia quoted about 43 minutes to reach 80 percent even on a 350-kW charger, far behind the quickest E-GMP vehicles. The 2026 model also started at $39,700 before destination, putting it close to newer EVs with faster charging, more range, or both.
That made the Niro EV increasingly difficult to position. It was too expensive to serve as Kia’s obvious entry EV, yet it did not have the 800-volt charging performance that helps distinguish the EV6 and EV9.
The plug-in hybrid faced a different problem. It sat between the efficient regular hybrid and Kia’s growing group of dedicated EVs, but added cost and charging complexity to a small crossover. Removing it simplifies the Niro lineup at a time when Kia has other electrified products to promote.
Kia’s Dedicated EVs Can Take Over
The Niro’s reset makes more sense when viewed alongside Kia’s newer electric portfolio. The EV3 is positioned as the smaller, more modern electric crossover, while the EV4 expands the affordable end of the lineup in markets where it is offered. Above them sit the EV5, EV6, and three-row EV9.
Those vehicles do not all have identical market plans, and U.S. timing has shifted for some models. Still, the product logic is clear: Kia no longer needs a single shared Niro body to represent hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and battery-electric technology.
The move also lets the Niro return to what it does best. At 174 inches long, it is smaller and easier to park than the compact SUVs that dominate North American showrooms. A simple hybrid powertrain gives buyers strong fuel economy without requiring home charging, while the hatchback body provides more utility than a conventional small car.
Kia is giving up something in the process. The old three-version Niro was a rare chance for shoppers to choose an electrification level without also changing the vehicle around it. A customer could compare the ownership experience of a hybrid, PHEV, and EV with broadly similar packaging. That clean comparison is disappearing.
Canada Still Needs Its Own Answer
This is a Kia America announcement, so Canadian shoppers should not automatically assume the same 2027 lineup, pricing, or timing. Kia Canada had not published a matching model-year announcement when this article was written.
The distinction matters because Canadian EV availability, incentives, fuel prices, and model positioning differ from the U.S. market. A Niro EV replacement also needs to be judged against Canada’s existing Kia EV choices rather than inferred from American pricing.
For now, the confirmed story is specific and significant: in the United States, the 2027 Niro is a refreshed hybrid rather than a three-way electrified family. It arrives with a higher base price, more technology, familiar performance, and a much narrower mission.
That is less adventurous than the original Niro formula, but probably easier for buyers to understand. If you want the small Kia with an engine, the Niro is the efficient one. If you want a Kia that plugs in, the company increasingly wants to move you into a vehicle designed around that powertrain from the start.
