Toyota and Lexus have opened a new chapter in the EV pricing wars. This week, Lexus confirmed that its redesigned 2026 ES lineup will offer an electric model — the ES 350e — as the lowest-priced variant in the range, undercutting the equivalent hybrid ES 350h by over $2,000. The ES 350e Premium starts at $48,795 including destination, while the hybrid ES 350h Premium starts at $50,995. It’s a rare inversion of the traditional EV premium, and it signals that Toyota’s luxury division is serious about moving electrons instead of gallons.
More Than Just a Trim Cheaper
The pricing novelty is notable, but the underlying hardware is what makes the ES EV genuinely interesting. The 2026 ES 350e delivers over 300 miles of EPA-estimated range from its single-motor front-wheel-drive setup, with a 0-60 time of around 5.8 seconds — competitive with the BMW i4 eDrive35 and considerably quicker than the base gas ES. The dual-motor ES 500e bumps output to around 340 horsepower and adds all-wheel drive, though range drops slightly.
Both ES EV variants support DC fast charging at up to 150 kW, allowing a 10% to 80% charge in roughly 35 minutes. On Level 2 AC charging, the ES 350e accepts up to 11 kW, good for a full overnight charge in around 8 hours. Those numbers aren’t class-leading — the BMW i4 edges it on charging speed — but they are competitive, and the price advantage is real.
Toyota’s Wider EV Pricing Strategy
The Lexus ES EV story fits within a broader Toyota Group push on electrified vehicle pricing. Reports from EV Update Media this week indicate that Toyota itself has moved to aggressively price its hybrid and EV lineup against competitors, with lease deals and purchase incentives on bZ models that have helped the brand capture the top non-Tesla EV sales spot in Q1 2026. The Lexus pricing strategy mirrors that playbook at a higher price point, positioning the ES EV as an alternative to both traditional luxury sedans and rival EVs from Mercedes and BMW.
What makes this significant is the signal it sends to the market. When a luxury brand deliberately prices its EV below its own hybrid, it acknowledges that range anxiety and charging concerns are real objections — and that lowering the sticker price is one way to overcome them. Whether that calculus holds at scale remains to be seen, but for buyers in the market for a new luxury sedan, the 2026 Lexus ES EV deserves a closer look than it might have gotten a year ago.
