BMW Neue Klasse X: A New Electric Era Begins
BMW's next-generation EV platform launches with the iX3 successor — and it might be the most important BMW in decades.
BMW officially pulled the wraps off the production-spec Neue Klasse X at the 2026 Geneva Motor Show, and the reactions have been… polarized. Which, honestly, is exactly what BMW wants. The Neue Klasse platform represents the most ambitious platform transition in BMW’s history — a ground-up rethinking of what an electric BMW should be. And the first production model, a direct successor to the iX3, is arriving in North American showrooms this summer.
What Is the Neue Klasse?
Before diving into the iX3 successor (which BMW is calling the iX3 G45 internally), a brief explainer: Neue Klasse is BMW’s new electric-first platform, designed from scratch without any gas-engine inheritance. The name is a deliberate callback to BMW’s original 1960s Neue Klasse line of compact, driver-focused cars that saved the company and spawned icons like the 2002.
The new platform uses:
- A new 800V electrical architecture
- Sixth-generation BMW eDrive motors with 20% greater efficiency
- A new cylindrical cell battery (instead of prismatic) developed with CATL and Samsung SDI
- A new iDrive 9 operating system with a curved, ultra-wide central display
The iX3 G45: By the Numbers
The first Neue Klasse vehicle for global markets is an electric SUV sized roughly between today’s X3 and X5:
- Length: 194.4 inches
- Wheelbase: 119.5 inches
- Gross battery capacity: 111.5 kWh (usable ~100 kWh)
- EPA range: Up to 380 miles (iX3 xDrive45 with standard wheels)
- Motors: Dual-motor AWD across all US trims
- Power output: 509 hp (iX3 M60 xDrive), 402 hp (iX3 xDrive45)
- 0-60 mph: 3.6 seconds (M60), 4.6 seconds (xDrive45)
- Top speed: 155 mph (electronically limited)
- DC fast charging: Up to 270 kW (10-80% in 21 minutes)
- AC charging: 22 kW onboard (0-100% in ~5.5 hours)
Design: The Controversial Part
The exterior is, how do we put this, not for the faint of heart. BMW has taken its “shark nose” front fascia to an extreme, with vertical kidney grilles that now function as illuminated light elements rather than openings. The headlights are split — a thin upper DRL strip and a separate headlight cluster below.
The side profile is cleaner: a fastback roofline, flush door handles, and a dramatic shoulder line that recalls the 1968 BMW 2002. The rear is dominated by a full-width LED bar — a design language BMW calls “Luz Auto” that will appear across all future Neue Klasse models.
Inside is a different story: near-universal acclaim for the new cabin. The curved display panel spans most of the dashboard width, housing a 14.9-inch central touchscreen and a 12.3-inch driver’s display behind a single pane of glass. The iDrive 9 system is responsive and adds QuickSelect — a new shortcut layer that lets you access functions without diving into nested menus. Physical switchgear is minimal but not absent; climate controls retain haptic-capacitive buttons.
The floating center console, inspired by the original 1960s Neue Klasse, adds storage beneath and houses a new crystal dial for iDrive control. Sustainable materials are front and center — the standard interior uses a mix of recycled plastics, cork accents, and a vegetable-tanned leather alternative. Real Merino leather remains optional.
The New Battery Chemistry
The 111.5 kWh battery pack uses BMW’s new Gen6 eDrive cells with a nickel-manganese-cobalt (NMC) chemistry and cylindrical cell format. Energy density is up roughly 30% versus the current iX3’s pack. More importantly, the 800V architecture enables charging speeds that weren’t possible on BMW’s previous 400V platform.
BMW has also implemented a new thermal management system that pre-conditions the battery proactively — using route planning data from the navigation system — so the battery is at optimal temperature when you arrive at a DC fast charger. The result is more consistent fast-charging performance in cold weather.
Driving Dynamics
BMW’s engineers were adamant that the Neue Klasse would not lose the “Ultimate Driving Machine” character in the translation to electric. The iX3 G45 uses a near-50/50 weight distribution, an actively damped air suspension (standard on M60), and a new generation of integral steering that reduces turning radius at low speeds without sacrificing high-speed stability. Ready to drive your BMW the way Munich intended? A set of BMW M-logo all-season floor mats keeps the interior protected on the way to the trailhead or the autocross.
The rear motors on the Neue Klasse are a new “eDrive 6” unit that BMW claims produces more power and torque while using less energy than the current eDrive 5. Regenerative braking can bring the car to a complete stop in one-pedal mode, and the regen is now integrated with the stability control system for more natural ABS干预.
Pricing and Trims
The 2026 BMW iX3 G45 lineup for the US:
- iX3 xDrive45: $71,800 — 402 hp, 380-mile range, standard features
- iX3 M60 xDrive: $89,200 — 509 hp, 350-mile range, M Sport suspension, enhanced brakes
Both include 3 years of 30-minute complimentary DC fast charging at any ChargePoint or Electrify America station via BMW’s partnership programs.
The Bigger Picture
The iX3 G45 is just the opening act. BMW has confirmed the Neue Klasse platform will spawn:
- An i3 sedan (successor to the current i3 hatchback)
- An iX5 (a three-row EV positioned above the iX3)
- A compact EV hatchback
- The next-generation M3, which will be electric-only
The platform was designed for scalability from day one. BMW’s manufacturing goal is to produce Neue Klasse vehicles at its plants in Munich, Regensburg, and Shenyang, with a new plant in Debrecen, Hungary dedicated to Neue Klasse production.
Early Verdict
BMW isn’t playing it safe with the Neue Klasse X. The exterior design will divide people — it always does with BMW — but the underlying technology is a genuine leap forward. The combination of 380 miles of range, 270 kW charging, and an interior that’s finally competitive with Mercedes and Audi in terms of technology and material quality makes the iX3 G45 a serious contender in the premium electric SUV segment.
The Model Y Long Range remains the default answer at this price point, and the Genesis Electrified GV70 continues to impress on value. But the Neue Klasse platform has BMW’s best driver-assistance tech yet, and for buyers who want a luxury EV that still feels like a BMW, the iX3 G45 delivers.
We’ll have a full road test in the coming weeks. Stay tuned.
