Rivian R2 Pre-Production Begins Ahead of Spring 2026 Launch
Rivian has begun pre-production builds of the R2 electric SUV at its Normal, Illinois facility, signaling the company is on track for first customer deliveries in spring 2026.
Rivian has begun pre-production builds of the R2 electric SUV at its Normal, Illinois manufacturing facility, the company confirmed on December 18, 2025 — an important milestone that suggests the company remains on track for first customer deliveries in spring 2026.
What Pre-Production Means
Pre-production vehicles are built using production-intent tooling and processes, but they are not sold to customers. Their purpose is to validate manufacturing processes, train workers, and identify problems before full production begins. Pre-production is distinct from “pilot” builds, which use prototype tooling and are typically built in smaller numbers earlier in the development cycle.
The fact that Rivian is running pre-production builds in December is significant because it gives the company approximately three months to validate and refine the production process before the scheduled spring launch. This is a more compressed timeline than many new vehicle launches, but Rivian is using the same facility and similar manufacturing processes for the R2 as it does for the R1 vehicles — which reduces the complexity of the ramp.
What We Know About R2 Production
The R2 will be built on the same Normal, Illinois assembly line as the R1T and R1S, with a modified final assembly area dedicated to the R2’s slightly different body structure. The R2 uses a modified version of the R1’s skateboard platform — with a lower ride height and slightly narrower track — rather than a ground-up new architecture.
Battery packs for the R2 will be assembled at Rivian’s adjacent battery facility, using the same cell suppliers as the R1. The smaller R2 battery pack (approximately 75-85 kWh versus 135+ kWh for the R1T) means fewer cells per pack, faster assembly, and lower cost.
Production Ramp Risks
The biggest risk to the R2 launch is not design or engineering — the vehicle has been validated extensively in prototypes — but rather the production ramp. Rivian struggled significantly with R1 production ramp-up in 2022-2023, as the company navigated a combination of supply chain challenges and manufacturing quality issues. The lessons learned from that experience should make the R2 ramp smoother, but the company is still a relatively small manufacturer with limited ability to absorb production disruptions.
The other risk is component supply. The R2 uses several new components not shared with the R1 — the new Atlas computing platform, new seat structures, new HVAC module — that have independent supply chains. Any disruption to those supply chains could slow the ramp.
Timeline
Rivian has guided for:
