This is not an all-wheel-drive comparison. Both entry trims drive their front wheels, and neither is pretending to be a winter rally car. It is a value decision between the LEAF’s exceptional range-per-dollar and the bZ’s roomier, more conventional compact-SUV package.

The LEAF Wins Range per Dollar

The numbers are unusually clear. Nissan Canada lists the LEAF S Plus at 488 km, while Toyota Canada rates the bZ XLE FWD at 380 km. The Nissan costs slightly less and carries 108 km more listed range.

That advantage comes mainly from battery size. The LEAF uses a 75-kWh pack; the front-drive bZ uses 57.7 kWh. Toyota’s official combined consumption figure of 16.1 kWh/100 km shows that its smaller pack is not simply covering poor efficiency. Nissan’s published 1.9 Le/100 km figure also points to a reasonably efficient car, but the two manufacturers do not present the same kWh/100 km comparison on their Canadian pages.

The larger LEAF battery creates useful flexibility. A household that normally drives 60 km per day may not need 488 km in summer, but the buffer becomes more valuable during a cold highway trip, after several years of battery ageing or on a route with unreliable charging options.

Buyers should still treat both ratings as comparison tools, not promises. Speed, temperature, tires, wind, cabin heat, elevation and battery state all affect real distance. A 488-km label does not guarantee a 488-km February drive, but beginning with 108 km more rated range gives the Nissan more room for those losses.

The bZ Is a Size Class Up

The Toyota’s strongest response is visible before either vehicle moves.

At 4,690 mm long, the bZ stretches 285 mm beyond the LEAF. It is also 50 mm wider and 93 mm taller, with a wheelbase that is 160 mm longer. The LEAF’s lower roof and 4,405-mm length make it easier to place in a tight city parking space; the bZ provides the more traditional compact-SUV footprint.

Dimensions do not automatically translate into perfectly proportionate passenger or cargo gains. Seat design, roof shape and the location of drivetrain hardware matter. They do tell buyers where to focus during a showroom visit. Put the tallest regular passenger behind the usual driver, bring the child seat or mobility equipment that must fit, and check the cargo opening with the objects the vehicle will actually carry.

The LEAF is best understood as an efficient urban crossover with strong range. The bZ is the more family-sized shape. Charging: Same Peak, Different Experience

Both manufacturers publish a 150-kW maximum DC charging rate, but peak power alone does not predict the length of a stop.

Toyota estimates 28 minutes from 10 to 80 percent under ideal conditions for the bZ. Nissan estimates 35 minutes for the LEAF. The Toyota is adding less energy because it has the smaller battery, so the seven-minute advantage does not mean its battery chemistry is universally superior. It does mean that a typical low-to-high road-trip stop should be shorter when both cars meet their ideal conditions.

The connector layouts also differ. The bZ has a single NACS inlet that handles home AC charging and DC fast charging. The LEAF places a NACS fast-charge port on the passenger side and a separate J1772 AC port on the driver’s side.

For public DC charging, both can use compatible Tesla Superchargers without an adapter. At home, the Toyota can plug directly into a compatible NACS wall connector. The Nissan needs J1772 for Level 1 or Level 2 charging, which is convenient for the huge installed base of Canadian J1772 equipment but less tidy for a household already standardized on NACS AC hardware.

Toyota also equips the bZ with an 11-kW onboard AC charger, battery preconditioning and a dual-voltage cable. Nissan equips the LEAF with a heat pump, battery heater and enhanced thermal management, and says the vehicle was tested in extreme Canadian winter conditions. In either vehicle, route the navigation to the fast charger when the system supports battery preparation and arrive with a low state of charge if a quick stop is the goal.

Performance Favours the Nissan; AWD Favours Neither

The LEAF’s front motor produces 214 hp and 261 lb-ft of torque. The bZ XLE FWD produces 168 hp, with Toyota listing about 198 lb-ft at the front motor. Nissan has the stronger paper powertrain while also carrying the larger battery.

Neither base model offers all-wheel drive. Proper winter tires remain the first traction purchase for either one, but drivers who regularly climb steep, poorly cleared roads may prefer an AWD trim.

Toyota makes that upgrade easy to understand: the $53,390 bZ XLE AWD jumps to 338 hp and 468 km of range. For an urban or suburban driver on maintained roads, front-wheel drive with good winter tires is entirely workable. The LEAF S Plus includes wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a heat pump, battery heater and Nissan Safety Shield 360. Its base specification does not include every comfort item found in higher LEAF trims, so buyers should compare the exact vehicle rather than assuming features shown in a Platinum Plus advertisement are standard.

The ownership risk is different for each. Toyota’s bZ has been substantially updated for 2026 but remains connected to an existing model line and dealer service network. The third-generation LEAF is new from the platform up. Nissan has fixed the old car’s biggest conceptual weaknesses with modern thermal management and NACS fast charging, yet this specific package has less long-term field history.

Get insurance quotes for both, compare warranty wording, and ask each dealer to itemize mandatory and optional charges. A $992 MSRP difference can disappear quickly through freight, dealer fees, accessories, finance rates or available inventory.
