The Most Efficient EVs of 2025 and 2026: Getting the Most Miles Per Dollar

From the Lucid Air to the Hyundai IONIQ 6, these are the most energy-efficient electric vehicles available, delivering the most miles per dollar of electricity.

By Marcus Holloway

Energy efficiency — measured in miles per gallon equivalent (MPGe) for U.S. sales and in kWh/100mi in Europe — tells you how far an EV can travel on a given amount of electricity. More efficient EVs cost less to drive, need fewer charging stops, and generally have lower lifetime battery degradation. Here are the most efficient EVs you can buy in 2025-2026.

Most Efficient EVs by MPGe (U.S. EPA)

1. Lucid Air Pure: 131 MPGe combined (410 mi range, 84 kWh)

The most efficient EV in America is also the most aerodynamically refined. The Lucid Air Pure’s Cd 0.197 drag coefficient — the lowest of any production car — translates to extraordinary efficiency. At 131 MPGe combined, it gets more miles per kWh than any competitor.

2. Hyundai IONIQ 6 AWD: 117 MPGe combined (270 mi range)

The IONIQ 6’s streamlined fastback design achieves 117 MPGe in AWD form — the best of any AWD EV. The 800V architecture enables ultra-fast charging that makes up for the slightly lower range.

3. Tesla Model 3 RWD: 132 MPGe combined (272 mi range)

Tesla’s efficiency leadership, once unchallenged, has been surpassed by Lucid. But the Model 3 RWD (Highland refresh) remains one of the most efficient EVs available.

Most Efficient in kWh/100mi (Real-World Highway)

1. Lucid Air Pure: 26 kWh/100mi at 75 mph 2. Tesla Model 3 RWD: 27 kWh/100mi at 75 mph 3. Hyundai IONIQ 6 RWD: 28 kWh/100mi at 75 mph

The Efficiency vs. Range Tradeoff

The most efficient EVs aren’t always the longest-range EVs. The Lucid Air Pure has 410 miles of range, but many efficient EVs achieve their numbers through lightweight construction and aerodynamics rather than large battery packs. A vehicle that is efficient but has a small battery will still have limited range.

The best practical choice for most buyers is an efficient vehicle with a large enough battery to eliminate range anxiety — the Hyundai IONIQ 6 AWD (117 MPGe, 270 miles) is the best balance of efficiency and practicality.
