Tesla's Shanghai Gigafactory Rolls Out Its 4 Millionth Vehicle
Tesla's Gigafactory Shanghai reached a major manufacturing milestone on December 8, 2025, producing its four-millionth vehicle — underlining the plant's role as Tesla's most productive manufacturing hub globally.
Tesla announced on December 8, 2025, that its Gigafactory Shanghai had rolled out its four-millionth vehicle — another milestone for the plant that has become the backbone of Tesla’s global production empire. The ceremony, held at the facility in Lin-gang Special Area, was marked by workers and executives posing for photos alongside the landmark vehicle.
Shanghai’s Gigafactory came online in late 2019, when Tesla broke ground in January and started production by December of that same year. The speed of construction and ramp-up set the template for how Tesla approaches new markets: move fast, tool fast, produce fast. Six years later, the plant is producing more vehicles per year than any other Tesla factory.
The Numbers Behind the Milestone
Tesla has never disclosed a precise production breakdown between Model 3 and Model Y at the Shanghai plant, but estimates based on registration data and supply chain intelligence suggest Model Y accounts for the majority of output. The compact crossover’s popularity in China — where it consistently ranks among the top-selling vehicles in the country overall, not just EVs — has driven much of the volume growth since 2021.
The plant also serves as a major export hub. In October 2025, Shanghai Gigafactory exported more than 35,000 vehicles — its highest monthly export volume in two years — suggesting demand in Europe and other markets is being served from Chinese production even as Tesla expands Berlin capacity.
A Remarkable Production Arc
To appreciate the scale of four million vehicles, consider the timeline: Tesla took roughly 12 years to build its first million vehicles globally across all factories. The second million came in about 18 months. Shanghai alone has now produced four million, and the plant continues to expand its stamping, painting, and assembly capacity.
The four-millionth vehicle milestone is a reminder that even as Tesla faces competitive pressure in China — from BYD’s aggressive pricing, NIO’s premium push, and new entrants like Xiaomi — the company’s manufacturing operation remains exceptionally efficient.
What Comes Next for Shanghai
Tesla is widely expected to begin producing a revised Model Y at Shanghai Gigafactory in 2026, following the pattern of the Cybertruck’s engineering updates and the refreshes applied to Model 3 in previous years. The plant also appears to be a candidate for future production of the next-generation affordable Tesla, should that program advance from concept to production.
For now, though, four million vehicles is a number worth acknowledging. It’s a lot of cars — and most of them came out of one factory in Shanghai.
