Hyundai IONIQ 5N Review: The Electric Sports Car That Happens to Be Practical
Hyundai's IONIQ 5 N proves that electric vehicles can deliver genuine driving excitement without sacrificing everyday usability. We put the 641-hp hot hatch through its paces.
Hyundai’s N division has done something remarkable with the IONIQ 5 N: they’ve created an electric vehicle that makes you want to drive it for the sake of driving. Not because it’s efficient, or because it’s the future, or because it makes a statement—but because it is genuinely, inexplicably fun.
The IONIQ 5 N is based on Hyundai’s excellent E-GMP platform, which also underpins the standard IONIQ 5 and Kia EV6. But where those cars prioritize comfort and efficiency, the N treatment transforms the platform into something entirely different. The dual-motor setup produces 641 horsepower and 568 lb-ft of torque in boost mode—enough to launch the 5 N from 0-60 mph in 3.2 seconds and on to a limited top speed of 162 mph.
What Makes It Special
The 5 N’s party trick is its simulated gear shifts. Using Hyundai’s N e-Shift system, the electric motors can mimic the feel of an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission, complete with fake rev-Hung and torque interruption on upshifts. It’s entirely artificial, of course—electric motors don’t need gears—but the effect is uncanny. It makes the car feel mechanical, connected, and alive in a way that most EVs simply aren’t.
The simulated engine noise, pumped through the speakers with surprisingly authentic character, completes the illusion. You can choose between a soundtrack inspired by Hyundai’s 2.0-liter turbocharged engine, a “synth” mode that sounds like a futuristic racer, and a quiet mode for mornings. The fake engine noise sounds like a video game at first, but after a few miles, you stop noticing—and start just driving.
Hyundai also fitted the 5 N with a dedicated sportscar mode for the suspension. The adaptive dampers are significantly stiffer than the standard IONIQ 5, and the car sits 0.8 inches lower. Body roll is remarkably well controlled for a vehicle weighing 4,890 pounds—though you never forget the mass when you pitch it into a corner and feel the front end push wide on worn pavement.
The 84 kWh battery (useable capacity) supports 800V charging at up to 350 kW, allowing a 10-80% charge in about 18 minutes. Range is the trade-off: the EPA rates the IONIQ 5 N at 221 miles, compared to 303 miles for the standard Long Range AWD IONIQ 5. Aggressive driving drops that further—we saw around 180 miles in mixed spirited driving.
The Everyday Reality
Hyundai made a deliberate choice to make the 5 N usable as a daily driver. The interior is lifted largely from the standard IONIQ 5, which means you get the same excellent 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, the same wide center console with sliding armrest, and the same reasonably spacious second row. The cargo area loses some space to the performance battery cooling system but remains practical at 24.4 cubic feet behind the rear seats.
Ride quality is firm but not punishing. At low speeds on broken pavement, the N’s suspension can feel crashy, but it settles nicely at speed. The regenerative braking is aggressive by default—Nappa regeneration mode allows one-pedal driving—but the transition to the hydraulic brakes is seamless.
The Competitive Landscape
The IONIQ 5 N competes with the Kia EV6 GT (641 hp, same platform, different character), the Tesla Model 3 Performance (estimated 510 hp, but not the engaging driver engagement of the Hyundai), and the Porsche Macan Electric (twin-motor, but at a significantly higher price point). Among this group, the Hyundai’s combination of engagement, practicality, and—importantly—price at $68,900 makes it exceptional value.
Score: 9/10
