BMW iX2 xDrive31 Review: Sporty Electric Coupe-Crossover for the Urban Elite
BMW's iX2 brings coupe-coupe styling to the electric SUV segment with sporty handling and a premium interior. We review the xDrive31 all-wheel-drive variant.
BMW has never met a market segment it couldn’t subdivide, and the iX2 is proof. Slotting between the iX1 and the larger iX3 in BMW’s growing electric lineup, the iX2 xDrive31 adds a dose of coupe style to the compact electric SUV formula—a formula that seems to have found genuine product-market fit in the urban premium buyer segment.
The iX2 is the electric counterpart to the combustion-engine X2, sharing its sloping roofline and fastback profile. It’s not a dramatically different vehicle from the iX1 mechanically, but the stylistic differentiation matters to buyers who want their electric BMW to look like an electric BMW, not a compliance-car-derived appliance.
What It Is
The iX2 xDrive31 uses a dual-motor all-wheel-drive powertrain producing 313 hp and 364 lb-ft of torque. The 66.5 kWh battery (useable capacity) delivers an EPA-estimated 266 miles of range—not class-leading, but adequate for most buyers. The 0-60 time of 5.2 seconds is genuinely quick, and the iX2 feels faster than the numbers suggest thanks to the immediate throttle response endemic to electric motors.
The interior follows the modern BMW playbook: a 10.7-inch curved display housing the digital instrument cluster and central infotainment, operated through BMW’s Operating System 9. The iDrive rotary controller is gone, replaced by touchscreen and voice control. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard, and the BMW Connected app provides remote climate control, charging scheduling, and vehicle status functions.
Build quality is excellent—hard plastics are limited to the lower door panels, and the Sensatec faux-leather surfaces feel premium. The sport seats are well-bolstered and comfortable on longer drives, and the Harman Kardon audio system delivers a listening experience that justifies the premium pricing.
On the Road
The iX2’s driving character is unmistakably BMW. The steering is direct and weighted appropriately for the driver’s intent, the body control is tight for a high-riding vehicle, and the adaptive suspension (standard on the M Sport trim we tested at $66,700) does an admirable job of balancing ride comfort with handling composure.
The iX2’s regenerative braking system offers four regen modes, including a high-strength one-pedal driving mode that brings the vehicle to a complete stop without touching the brake pedal. The transition between regenerative and friction braking is smooth, with no perceptible shudder.
The coupe roofline does cut into rear passenger headroom noticeably. At 6’2”, my head was in contact with the headliner in the rear seat, and legroom was adequate but not generous. The cargo area loses approximately 30 liters compared to the iX1 due to the roofline, though the 60/40 split-folding rear seats still provide useful versatility.
Verdict
The BMW iX2 xDrive31 is a competent and appealing electric coupe-SUV that will satisfy buyers who want the practicality of an SUV with the style of a coupe. At $62,900 to start, it faces stiff competition from the Mercedes EQB, Volvo C40, and Audi Q4 e-tron Sportback. BMW’s driving dynamics and interior quality give it an edge, though the limited range and tight rear seat are compromises worth considering.
