Volkswagen ID.7 Beats Tesla Model 3 in European Monthly Sales
For the first time, the Volkswagen ID.7 outsold the Tesla Model 3 in Europe, moving 21,400 units in September 2025 versus the Model 3's 18,900.
Volkswagen sold 21,400 ID.7 sedans in Europe in September 2025, edging past the Tesla Model 3’s 18,900 units for the first time — a notable milestone in what has been Tesla’s strongest European market segment.
Why the ID.7 Is Gaining
The ID.7, built on VW’s MEB platform with the newer APP550 drive unit, addresses many of the criticisms that plagued earlier ID. models. The software has been significantly improved — VW’s MIB4 infotainment system is finally responsive and logically laid out. The 15-inch center screen is bright and clear, and the ID.7 now supports wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto properly.
The ID.7’s key advantage in Europe is packaging. At 4,961 mm long with a 2,966 mm wheelbase, it offers more rear legroom than a Model 3, with a comfortable back seat that makes sense for European families who regularly transport passengers. The 545-liter trunk is also larger than the Model 3’s 425 liters.
Range and Charging
The ID.7 Pro S with the 86 kWh battery offers an WLTP range of 709 km (440 miles) — among the best in the segment. Real-world range in mixed European driving sits around 380-400 km, competitive with the Model 3 Long Range’s ~400 km WLTP rating.
The 200 kW DC fast charging capability is slightly below the Model 3’s 250 kW, but the ID.7’s battery preconditioning is now genuinely good — it preconditioning on route, getting the battery to the optimal temperature before you arrive at a charger.
Pricing
The ID.7 Pro S starts at €56,995 in Germany, before the €5,700 EV incentive. The Model 3 Long Range starts at €49,990 — cheaper, but without the same rear seat space. A base Model 3 RWD starts at €42,990.
Market Context
Tesla’s European sales have been under pressure throughout 2025 due to increased competition, geopolitical uncertainty affecting brand perception, and the Model 3 aging as the “new” refresh from 2024 ages into its second year. VW, by contrast, has been systematically refreshing its EV lineup and is now reaping the benefits.
The ID.7’s September win is a single data point, not a trend — Tesla still outsells VW in Europe overall, and the Model Y remains Europe’s best-selling EV. But it’s a meaningful signal that the VW Group’s years of software remediation and product investment are translating into real market traction.
