EV Maintenance 101: What Every Owner Needs to Know (Beyond the Oil Change)

Electric vehicles require different maintenance than gasoline cars. We cover tire pressure, brake wear, and battery care for longevity.

By Marcus Holloway

The biggest misconception about EVs is that they are ‘set it and forget it.’ While you won’t be changing oil every 5,000 miles, there are critical maintenance items unique to electric powertrains that owners must monitor.

The Things You Don’t Need To Worry About

  1. Oil Changes: No internal combustion engine means no routine oil changes.
  2. Spark Plugs/Belts: These components simply don’t exist in the powertrain.

The Critical Items to Monitor

1. Tires (The Biggest Wear Item): EVs are heavy, and their instant torque puts massive strain on tires. You must check tire pressure monthly. Under-inflation drastically reduces range and increases wear. 2. Brake System: Because regenerative braking handles most of the slowing down, physical brake pads last much longer than in gas cars. However, you still need to inspect calipers and rotors periodically for signs of overheating or fluid leaks. 3. Cooling Systems: While there’s no engine coolant, the battery pack and inverter systems require dedicated cooling fluids. These must be checked by a professional every 2-3 years.

Battery Care: The Owner’s Role

The best way to protect your battery is through smart charging habits:

  • Don’t routinely ‘deep cycle’: Avoid letting the battery sit at 1% charge for weeks on end. Keep it topped up between 50% and 80% when parked long-term.
  • Use Climate Control Wisely: Running the cabin heater/AC uses significant energy. Pre-conditioning the car while plugged in is ideal, as it uses grid power rather than battery power.

The Cost Savings vs. Effort Tradeoff

While maintenance costs are lower overall, they shift from routine fluid changes to specialized electrical and tire care. Budgeting for premium tires every 3-5 years will be your biggest recurring cost.
