Quick verdict
Start with the Nissan LEAF S+, Toyota bZ XLE FWD and Chevrolet Equinox EV FWD if you want a practical electric crossover without moving into luxury pricing. The LEAF has the lowest published US entry MSRP of these three; the Equinox pairs more space with substantial rated range; the bZ offers a smaller-battery entry point. Your local quote, charging access and required equipment decide the better purchase.

| Toyota bZ XLE FWD (2026) | USD $34,900 base MSRP | CAD $45,990 MSRP | 236 miles EPA / 380 km Canadian published range | 57.7-kWh battery; longer-range US FWD Plus is a different trim |

Understand what each price includes
LEAF: Nissan’s US MSRP excludes destination, taxes, title and licence. Its Canadian announcement pairs the CAD $44,998 MSRP with a CAD $47,846 selling price including freight/PDI and listed fees; taxes and registration remain additional. Request the exact breakdown for your province. See the US press kit and Canadian press kit.
bZ: Toyota’s USD $34,900 base MSRP excludes dealer processing and handling, taxes and registration. Toyota Canada lists CAD $45,990 MSRP and a CAD $49,648 estimated vehicle price including freight/PDI, air-conditioning charge and maximum listed dealer/other fees, excluding taxes, licence, insurance and registration. Sources: US trims, US pricing basis and Canadian pricing announcement.
Equinox EV: these are the advertised starting prices on Chevrolet’s 2026 US page and 2026 Canadian page, rather than a normalized MSRP comparison. Canadian advertising includes freight and specified charges; ask both dealers to separate destination/freight, dealer fees, optional equipment, tax and registration. The US LT 1 and Canadian LT equipment differ, so the price gap is not just exchange rates.
Which tradeoffs matter?
The US bZ FWD Plus reaches a higher range rating than the entry XLE FWD, but its larger battery and higher price belong in a separate comparison. Pairing the cheapest bZ price with its longest-range specification would overstate value. Apply the same check to AWD, larger wheels and higher LEAF trims.
For a tight budget, compare actual financing cost and insurance as well as range. A shorter-range model can work well for daily driving with home charging. Frequent highway trips, winter temperatures or public-charging dependence make reserve range and reliable stops more important.
Check incentives in the market where you live
US buyers should use the US EV incentive guide: the old federal clean-vehicle credits are unavailable for acquisitions after September 30, 2025, according to the IRS. A dealer discount is a separate offer. Canadian buyers should confirm the exact vehicle and transaction against EVAP rules and local programs before deducting any rebate.

Frequently asked questions
Are Canadian prices just US prices converted to CAD?
No. Local trims, equipment, fees and pricing differ. Compare official local prices and itemized quotes rather than converting MSRP.
Does the cheapest trim have the longest advertised range?
Not necessarily. The 2026 Toyota bZ entry XLE FWD has a 236-mile EPA rating, while the longer-range US FWD Plus is a different trim. Match the price and range to the same version.
