Massachusetts Opens 32 Highway Tesla Superchargers to Non-Tesla EVs

Massachusetts has opened 32 Tesla Supercharger ports at four I-90 and I-95 service plazas to compatible non-Tesla EVs, with charging speeds up to 250 kW.

Massachusetts has turned 32 existing Tesla Supercharger ports into a more useful piece of public highway infrastructure without waiting for a new charging site to be built.

Compatible non-Tesla electric vehicles can now use eight Supercharger ports at each of four state-owned service plazas on Interstate 90 and Interstate 95. The locations are open around the clock, and Massachusetts says every stall can deliver up to 250 kW.

For EV drivers crossing the state, the practical win is location. These are service-plaza chargers directly on major travel corridors, not stations that require a longer detour into a shopping centre or industrial park.

Which Massachusetts Superchargers Are Now Open?

The Massachusetts Department of Transportation announcement lists four locations:

  • Newton Service Plaza: I-95 southbound, eight ports
  • Lexington Service Plaza: I-95 northbound, eight ports
  • Charlton Service Plaza: I-90 eastbound, eight ports
  • Charlton Service Plaza: I-90 westbound, eight ports

Access is available immediately under a new agreement between MassDOT and Tesla. All four sites are available 24 hours a day.

The directional detail matters. Newton serves southbound I-95 traffic, Lexington serves northbound I-95 traffic, and Charlton has separate sites for eastbound and westbound Massachusetts Turnpike drivers. EV owners should select the correct plaza in their navigation app rather than assuming the charger can be reached easily from either side of the highway.

Which Non-Tesla EVs Can Use Them?

MassDOT says the ports are available to eligible vehicles with a native SAE J3400 charging port, commonly called NACS, and to compatible CCS1-equipped EVs using an approved J3400 DC adapter supplied by Tesla or the vehicle manufacturer.

That does not mean every non-Tesla EV can simply arrive, plug in and charge. Compatibility depends on the vehicle brand, model, software and adapter access.

Tesla’s support page for other EVs advises drivers to add their vehicle details in the Tesla app. The app then shows compatible Supercharger locations, live availability and pricing. For an app-started session, drivers select the charging post, add a payment method and follow the prompts.

Third-party adapters are not a safe shortcut. Tesla says CCS1 vehicles must use an approved NACS DC adapter provided by Tesla or the vehicle manufacturer. Owners should also confirm that their automaker has enabled Supercharger access before planning a trip around one of these sites.

Up To 250 kW Does Not Mean Every EV Gets 250 kW

Each of the 32 stalls is rated for charging at up to 250 kW, but the vehicle controls how much power it can accept.

Actual speed will vary with the EV’s maximum DC charging rate, battery state of charge, battery temperature and charging curve. A vehicle capable of only 150 kW will not suddenly charge at 250 kW, while even a 250-kW-capable EV usually reaches its peak only during part of the session.

Preconditioning the battery before arrival can make a meaningful difference when the vehicle supports it. Drivers should navigate to the charger through the car’s built-in route planner when possible, giving the battery-management system a chance to prepare for fast charging.

Cable reach can also be awkward at some Supercharger sites because non-Tesla charge ports are located in different parts of the vehicle. Tesla advises drivers to avoid parking diagonally and to block as few adjacent stalls as possible. That is especially important at busy service plazas where a badly positioned vehicle can make a second port unusable.

Why This Is More Important Than The Port Count Suggests

Thirty-two ports is not a huge statewide buildout. Massachusetts says it already has more than 11,000 publicly accessible charging ports. The significance is that these chargers were already installed in strategically valuable locations but were previously unavailable to many non-Tesla drivers.

Opening existing hardware is quicker than acquiring land, upgrading utility service, permitting a site and constructing an entirely new charging station. It also gives drivers more confidence that a highway charging stop will include restrooms, food and other basic travel amenities.

MassDOT says four state chargers at the Barnstable Service Plaza began operating in April 2026. It also lists 14 DC fast-charging ports at sites in Plymouth, Bridgewater, Greenfield and Lexington. The newly opened Superchargers add another layer to that network along two of the state’s most important corridors.

For drivers travelling across New England, the Charlton sites are particularly useful. I-90 is the main east-west route across Massachusetts, linking the Boston area with central and western Massachusetts before continuing toward New York. Newton and Lexington strengthen north-south charging access around the Boston region on I-95.

What Drivers Should Check Before Leaving

Non-Tesla owners planning to use one of the four plazas should confirm five things:

  1. The exact site appears as compatible after their vehicle is added to the Tesla app.
  2. Their EV has a native J3400/NACS port or an approved DC adapter.
  3. Their automaker has activated Tesla Supercharger access for the vehicle.
  4. The correct directional service plaza is included in the route.
  5. Current availability and pricing are acceptable before arrival.

A Supercharging membership is not required at sites open to other EVs, although Tesla offers an optional membership that can lower charging prices at participating locations. Pricing can vary by site and time, so the app is the source to check rather than assuming a fixed statewide rate.

This is the kind of charging-network improvement that delivers an immediate benefit without a ribbon-cutting for new hardware.

The chargers already existed. The useful change is that more vehicles can now access them, and they sit where road-trip charging belongs: directly on major highways with normal service-plaza amenities.

There are still caveats. Four locations do not solve every Massachusetts charging gap, vehicle compatibility needs to be checked carefully, and older Supercharger cable layouts can be inconvenient for EVs with differently positioned charge ports. Peak power is also only a site rating, not a promise that every car will pull 250 kW.

Still, converting 32 restricted highway ports into broadly accessible fast chargers is a practical step. For compatible non-Tesla drivers on I-90 and I-95, Massachusetts just made an electric road trip noticeably easier.
