Used EV Battery Health in Canada: What Buyers Should Ask For
A battery State of Health percentage can help when buying a used EV, but only when the test method, warranty, fault scan and physical inspection also make sense.
A used electric vehicle can be a terrific value, but the odometer does not tell the whole story. Two otherwise similar EVs can deliver different usable range because their batteries have aged differently, their software estimates capacity differently, or one has an unresolved fault that a glossy listing will never mention.
That is why battery State of Health, usually shortened to SoH, is becoming a bigger part of the used-EV conversation. Three British EV organizations called this week for standardized health certificates on dealer-sold used EVs. Canada does not need to copy that exact proposal to see the useful principle: buyers should receive meaningful battery information before signing, not discover the car’s limitations afterward.
The catch is that a percentage by itself can look more precise than it really is. A strong purchase decision combines a documented battery result with an EV-specific inspection, the exact Canadian warranty, charging checks, recall history and a realistic range requirement.

Verify the warranty by VIN before negotiating. “Eight years” is not enough detail. Confirm the original in-service date, kilometre limit, whether coverage transfers, the manufacturer’s capacity threshold, exclusions and what repair or replacement the warranty promises.

What State of Health Actually Means
State of Health generally describes how much battery capability remains compared with a reference point when the battery was new. For a buyer, the most useful version is usually remaining usable energy capacity. If a pack originally made 70 kWh available and a credible assessment now estimates 63 kWh, the capacity result is roughly 90 percent of that original usable figure.
Even that simple example needs context. Automakers reserve buffers at the top and bottom of a battery’s total or “gross” capacity, so the advertised pack size may not equal the energy a driver can use. Software updates can alter those buffers. A battery-management system may also need recent charging and driving data before its estimate settles.
The United Nations’ Global Technical Regulation No. 22 addresses this information problem by establishing in-vehicle battery-durability monitoring and minimum-performance concepts. Its technical rationale notes that onboard capacity estimates can vary with sensors, algorithms, user charging behaviour and cell characteristics. The broader goal is accurate, accessible and comparable battery information—not simply placing an unexplained number in a sales ad.
That distinction matters in Canada’s current used-EV market. A Toronto used-EV dealer announced in March that it had begun displaying third-party battery reports with SoH, usable capacity and cell-health information. It is a useful example of what greater transparency can look like, but buyers should still ask how any report was produced and what its fields mean.
What a Useful Battery Report Should Include
A report becomes far more valuable when another person can understand and reproduce the basis of the result. Before treating a certificate as negotiating evidence, look for:
- the VIN, model, model year and odometer reading
- the inspection date and identity of the test provider
- the diagnostic tool, data source or procedure used
- estimated usable capacity, not only a coloured badge
- the reference capacity used to calculate the percentage
- battery and charging fault codes, including whether codes were recently cleared
- cell-voltage or module imbalance when the vehicle exposes reliable data
- battery temperature and state of charge during the assessment
- software version when it affects the manufacturer’s estimate
- a clear explanation of any result the tool could not obtain
The absence of one field does not automatically make a report worthless. Vehicles expose different data, and proprietary battery-management systems do not all answer the same questions. The important point is disclosure. A 92-percent result with no method, no date and no vehicle identifier deserves less confidence than a slightly lower number backed by a clear, model-appropriate process.
Ask for the report before paying a deposit or make the agreement conditional on an acceptable independent inspection. If the seller will not permit a qualified inspection, the buyer has learned something important without having to gamble on the vehicle.
Do Not Use Dashboard Range as a Health Test
The distance shown beside the battery icon is a prediction, not a laboratory measurement. It can move sharply with outside temperature, cabin heat, highway speed, hills, wind, payload, tires and the previous driver’s efficiency.
A used EV sitting at 100 percent charge on a warm dealer lot may display an optimistic number after gentle local driving. The same healthy car can show much less after a fast winter highway trip. Neither reading isolates battery degradation.
A drive is still useful. Start with the displayed state of charge, record distance and energy consumption, operate the vehicle normally, and note the ending state of charge. Try charging on the equipment the household expects to use. Listen for unusual cooling-system noise and watch for power, battery or charging warnings.
Treat that information as a practical fit check. It can reveal implausible behaviour or confirm that the vehicle handles a representative route, but weather and traffic make it unsuitable as the only capacity measurement.
Battery Capacity Is Not Battery Safety
An SoH percentage mostly addresses remaining performance. It does not replace an inspection for physical damage or electrical faults.
The high-voltage pack sits low in most EVs, where road debris, improper lifting or a collision can damage its enclosure. A technician familiar with the model should inspect accessible underbody areas, shields, mounting points, coolant lines and connectors without opening the pack. Moisture intrusion, coolant loss, isolation faults and impact damage are different problems from gradual capacity loss.
Check the VIN in Transport Canada’s recalls database and confirm that all applicable remedies were completed. Review collision and service history. Ask whether battery modules, the complete pack, charging hardware or thermal-management components were repaired or replaced, and request invoices rather than relying on a verbal summary.
Do not forget the 12-volt battery. It powers control modules and contactors that allow the high-voltage system to wake up. A weak 12-volt unit can create confusing warnings or a no-start condition even when the traction battery is healthy.
An ordinary used-car inspection still matters as well. Tires, brakes, wheel bearings, suspension, climate control, glass, corrosion and accident repairs can turn an attractive EV price into an expensive first year.
Read the Warranty, Not the Headline
CAA-Quebec says most EVs carry roughly eight years or 160,000 kilometres of coverage on major electric-drive components, but the exact battery promise varies considerably. Some warranties cover defects without promising a specific capacity. Others identify a degradation threshold. Repair may involve replacing modules, installing a remanufactured pack or restoring capacity to the warranty standard rather than providing a new battery.
Before relying on coverage, ask a Canadian dealer for the warranty status tied to the VIN and confirm:
- Start date: When was the vehicle first placed in service?
- Time and distance: Which limit arrives first?
- Capacity provision: Is degradation covered, and how is it measured?
- Transferability: Does the coverage continue for the next owner?
- Origin: Does Canadian coverage apply if the vehicle was imported?
- Exclusions: Do prior damage, salvage status, modification or maintenance issues affect eligibility?
- Remedy: What can the manufacturer repair or install if a claim is approved?
Keep the written answer with the sales file. A remaining warranty can materially reduce risk, but only if the specific condition is covered and the vehicle qualifies.
Turn the Result Into a Range Decision
The right question is not “Is 90 percent good?” It is “Does this car, at this measured condition and price, cover the household’s hard trips with enough margin?”
Start with the vehicle’s original usable capacity and verified new-vehicle range for the exact trim and wheel size. Apply the health estimate cautiously, then reserve additional margin for winter, highway driving, wind, detours and normal day-to-day charging habits. Do not assume range falls in perfect lockstep with one reported percentage, because efficiency and test cycles also matter.
Consider a commuter who needs 120 km on the coldest regular day and can charge at home every night. A well-priced older EV with modest degradation may still be an easy fit. The same car may be frustrating for a renter who depends on public charging and regularly travels 300 km between reliable sites.
Charging deserves its own check. Confirm the connector, maximum AC charging rate, realistic DC fast-charging performance and access to the networks on the buyer’s routes. Before making the offer:
- identify the exact trim, battery and original Canadian specifications
- obtain the VIN and check recall, registration, lien and collision history
- request a documented battery-health report
- book an independent EV-specific pre-purchase inspection
- verify Level 1 or Level 2 charging and, when practical, DC fast charging
- confirm both charging cables and any promised adapters are present
- verify the battery and vehicle warranty in writing
- price insurance, tires, home charging and immediate repairs
- compare the car’s conservative winter capability with the household’s longest routine trip
- make the purchase conditional when required evidence is still outstanding
That process may not produce one perfect number, but it turns an unknown battery into a set of manageable questions. It also gives good used EVs a fairer chance. A properly assessed car with some normal degradation can be a far better purchase than a newer vehicle whose condition, charging fit and total cost were never examined.
