In a bold move that underscores its commitment to the Chinese market, Volkswagen Group has launched a major product offensive at Auto Shanghai 2025, marking a significant milestone in its “In China, for China” strategy. The German automotive giant unveiled seven world premieres, including five next-generation intelligent, fully connected vehicles (ICV), demonstrating the company’s innovative prowess and dedication to meeting Chinese consumer preferences.

Strategic Focus on Chinese Market

The showcase at Auto Shanghai 2025 represents the beginning of Volkswagen’s largest ICV offensive in China to date. By 2027, the Group plans to introduce more than 20 fully electric and electrified models (NEV) as part of a comprehensive product strategy. This ambitious plan will expand further, with the Group’s brands offering approximately 30 all-electric models by 2030.

“China is an important market for the Volkswagen Group,” stated Oliver Blume, Chairman of the Board of Management of Volkswagen AG. “Two years ago, we realigned our strategy. And we have made progress faster than initially planned. Our products are tailored to the needs of Chinese customers: with a clear design language and cutting-edge technologies.”

AI-Powered Autonomous Driving

A highlight of the event was the unveiling of Volkswagen’s AI-empowered, highly automated driving system specifically developed for China by CARIZON, the Group’s intelligent driving powerhouse in the region. The system sets new benchmarks for automated, intelligent driving behavior across various traffic scenarios while maintaining the highest safety and quality standards.

World Premieres and Brand Highlights

The event featured several significant debuts across the Group’s brands:

  • Audi: Unveiled a new all-electric vehicle based on the Premium Platform Electric (PPE), featuring emotional design, next-generation infotainment, and powerful Level 2++ automated driving capabilities
  • New AUDI Brand: Presented its first production model developed entirely in China
  • Volkswagen Brand: Showcased three next-generation ICV concepts, each featuring innovative technologies and a new progressive design language

Looking Ahead

Ralf Brandstätter, Volkswagen AG Group Board Member for China, emphasized the significance of this product offensive: “With our strong ‘In China, for China’ strategy, we are shifting delivery mode for Auto Shanghai. By 2027, we will launch around 20 fully electric and electrified models, equipped with state-of-the-art technologies and groundbreaking systems for highly automated driving.”

This strategic initiative demonstrates Volkswagen’s commitment to maintaining its position as the leading international automotive manufacturer in China while adapting to the rapidly evolving demands of the world’s largest automotive market. The company’s focus on localized development and customer-centric innovation suggests a promising future for Volkswagen’s presence in China’s competitive automotive landscape.
