End of an Era: Subaru Legacy Production to Cease in 2025

In a significant announcement that marks the end of an era in automotive history, Subaru of America has confirmed that production of its Legacy sedan will conclude in spring 2025. The decision brings to a close a remarkable 36-year run for the company’s longest-running model line, which has been a cornerstone of Subaru’s American manufacturing presence since 1989.

The Legacy, which was specifically designed for the American market, holds the distinction of being the first Subaru model manufactured in the United States at the company’s Indiana plant. Throughout its six generations, the Legacy has accumulated over 1.3 million sales in the U.S. market and built a strong reputation for safety and reliability. This is evidenced by the fact that an impressive 94% of Legacy vehicles sold in the last decade are still operational today.

The model’s safety credentials are particularly noteworthy, having earned the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) Top Safety Pick designation for 18 consecutive years. The 2025 model year Legacy, which will be the final iteration, continues this tradition of safety excellence with standard EyeSight® Driver Assist Technology across all trim levels.

The discontinuation of the Legacy reflects broader industry trends, as consumer preferences continue to shift from traditional sedans to SUVs and crossovers. Additionally, it aligns with Subaru’s strategic pivot toward electrification. The company has already launched its first fully electric vehicle, the Solterra, in 2023, and has announced plans to introduce eight electric vehicle models by 2028.

The Legacy’s legacy, however, extends beyond its direct sales impact. The model played a crucial role in Subaru’s history, with the Legacy Wagon serving as the foundation for the development of the now-iconic Outback model. The first-generation Legacy also marked a significant technological leap for Subaru, introducing features such as multi-point fuel injection, four-wheel disc brakes, fully independent suspension, and available Full-Time AWD.

For those interested in owning one of the final Legacy models, the 2025 version will arrive at Subaru retailers this spring with a starting price of $24,895, maintaining the same entry point as the 2024 model year.

As Subaru prepares to bid farewell to the Legacy, the move represents more than just the discontinuation of a model line - it symbolizes the automotive industry’s broader transition toward electrification and changing consumer preferences. While the Legacy sedan may be reaching the end of its road, its influence on Subaru’s success and reputation in the American market will be remembered as a significant chapter in the company’s history.
