Hyundai Unveils Next-Generation Hybrid System for 2025
Hyundai Motor Group announces advanced hybrid powertrain system with dual integrated motors, promising significant improvements in power and efficiency
Hyundai Motor Group has unveiled its next-generation hybrid powertrain system, marking a significant advancement in hybrid vehicle technology. The announcement, made at the company’s ‘Next-Gen Hybrid System Tech Day’, showcases a sophisticated system that promises to deliver substantial improvements in both power and efficiency for future Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis vehicles.
Revolutionary Dual-Motor System
At the heart of this innovation is a new hybrid transmission system that integrates two built-in motors - designated as P1 and P2. The P1 motor handles vehicle start-up, battery energy generation, and power assistance, while the P2 motor is dedicated to propulsion and regenerative braking. This dual-motor configuration enables smoother operation, improved efficiency, and enhanced performance compared to current hybrid systems.
Flexible Integration and Enhanced Performance
One of the most notable features of the new hybrid system is its versatility. The system can be paired with various internal combustion engines across the group’s lineup, enabling applications ranging from compact cars to large SUVs. This flexibility allows for power outputs spanning from around 100 PS to over 300 PS, making it suitable for a wide range of vehicle segments.
The new system has already demonstrated impressive results in real-world applications. When combined with a newly developed 2.5-liter turbo engine in the all-new Palisade, the system delivers:
- Maximum fuel efficiency of 14.1 km/liter
- Maximum system output of 334 PS
- Maximum torque of 460 Nm
These figures represent significant improvements over previous generations:
- 45% greater fuel efficiency
- 19% increase in maximum power
- 9% improvement in maximum torque
Advanced Features and Technology
The new hybrid system incorporates several innovative technologies to enhance both performance and efficiency:
- Enhanced cylinder flow optimization
- High-efficiency cycle specifically designed for hybrid operation
- Advanced power management system
- Improved energy recovery capabilities
The system also utilizes an ‘over-expansion cycle’ that optimizes the engine’s compression and combustion processes. This technique reduces power consumption during compression while maximizing energy generation during combustion, significantly improving overall engine efficiency.
Market Impact and Future Applications
The introduction of this new hybrid system comes at a crucial time as automakers worldwide are working to meet increasingly stringent emissions regulations while maintaining performance standards that consumers expect. Hyundai Motor Group’s new system will first appear in the recently launched Palisade, with plans to expand its application across multiple models and brands within the group.
“We have developed an innovative new hybrid system that integrates our long-accumulated engine, transmission and hybrid system development experience with the electrification technology applied to our world-class electric vehicles,” said Dong Hee Han, head of Hyundai Motor Group’s Electrified Propulsion Test Center. “We will continue to develop innovative technologies that actively utilize electrification capabilities during the transition to EVs, providing customers with eco-friendly vehicles that offer superior performance.”
Looking Ahead
This advancement in hybrid technology represents a significant step forward in Hyundai Motor Group’s commitment to sustainable mobility. As the automotive industry continues its transition toward electrification, this new hybrid system provides an efficient bridge technology that delivers immediate environmental benefits while maintaining the practicality and performance that consumers demand.
The system is scheduled to be implemented in production vehicles starting from January 2025, marking the beginning of a new era in hybrid vehicle technology for Hyundai Motor Group. With this innovation, the company continues to demonstrate its leadership in developing sustainable mobility solutions that meet the evolving needs of the global automotive market.
