LOS ANGELES — Hyundai giveth and Hyundai taketh away with the next-generation Elantra for the 2021 model year.

Last week, it announced the discontinuation of the Elantra GT hatchback and its sporty N Line trim. This week, the Korean automaker confirmed that the new N Line version of the Elantra sedan will be equipped with the GT’s 201-hp turbocharged engine, standard six-speed manual gearbox and optional dual-clutch automatic.

“The N Line model, characterized by N-specific design and performance-enhancing elements, offers an attractive entry point to the Hyundai’s high-performance N-brand lineup and will expand Elantra’s appeal to a broader range of customers,” Hyundai said.

Hyundai said the Elantra hatchback has become less relevant given that consumers interested in the five-door body style are moving toward crossovers.

Pricing has not been announced for the 2021 Elantra. The base 2020 model starts at $20,275 with shipping. The top-end Elantra Sport — which offers the 201-hp turbo engine but not the other N Line touches — starts at $25,125 with shipping.
